FutureLot at the Massachusetts State House: Celebrating the ADU Design Challenge Winners

Today was a milestone moment, not just for FutureLot, but for ADU development across the Commonwealth.

FutureLot co-founders Nitzan Achsaf and Avi Kaufman joined Governor Maura Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, and Housing and Livable Communities Secretary Juana Matias at the Massachusetts State House for the announcement of the ADU Design Challenge winners. The event, held in the Great Hall, brought together policymakers, housing advocates, builders, and technology partners united around a single goal: making ADUs easier and cheaper to build throughout Massachusetts.

The ADU Design Challenge asked designers and architects to create pre-approved ADU floor plans that will be made publicly available to Massachusetts homeowners and builders. By removing the design phase as a barrier to entry, the initiative directly addresses one of the most time-consuming and costly steps in the ADU process.

FutureLot was invited as a valued partner  in the Healey-Driscoll Administration's broader housing work. That partnership is visible every day through the ADU Wizard, a tool FutureLot powers on the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center's ADU Resource Center at goclean.masscec.com/adu. The Wizard lets Massachusetts homeowners type in their address and immediately see what's possible on their specific property, including zoning conditions, lot details, and ADU options, before they spend a dollar on design or consultation.

The connection between today's announcement and that tool is direct. When pre-approved designs become publicly available, the ADU Wizard becomes an even more powerful starting point. A homeowner can check their lot, understand what they're allowed to build, and access ready-to-use floor plans, all in one place.

Massachusetts has been moving fast on housing. The MBTA Communities Act, the Affordable Homes Act, and now the ADU Design Challenge represent a coordinated push to make the Commonwealth a model for housing production. FutureLot is proud to be part of that infrastructure.

For Massachusetts homeowners and builders ready to explore what's possible on their property, the ADU Wizard is live now at goclean.masscec.com/adu.
